An Article Relating to Technology 2:

http://www.suite101.com/content/decline-in-facetoface-communication-at-work-a185839

This article is about computer mediated communication (CMC) replacing face to face communication, particularly in the world of business. It lists some of the advantages and types of CMC used in the workplace, such as Mega meeting and Skype.

Technology is very useful in the business world and in a short amount of time it has become very important in the workplace. It’s made communication quicker, easier and world wide, it’s now easy to connect with people in other countries.

According to the article there is a cost to our use of technology. People are so busy with CMC that they forget to make face to face connections with people they work with everyday. It asks the question is CMC used in the workplace simply because it’s more efficient or are people not bothered for the niceties and reactions of face to face reactions.

Research was done in companies in America in 2007 to look into employee’s decency on CMC and how it’s affecting their working relationships. People in the workplace are relying more and more  on CMC for everything e.g. share information, grow relationships etc. it brought up the question: is technology our new best friend?
CMC has created a new way of life in the business world; it’s no longer a nine to six day with CMC keeping us connected 24 hours a day.

Some businesses even let their employees work from home via the internet. But is it healthy for people to be doing this, both physically and mentally. There's no need to get up and get dressed and we don’t get to see anyone that we work with. There are other disadvantages to working from home as well according to the same survey. Apparently people who work from home are less likely to get promotions than people who went to work everyday. Bosses tended to forget about the people working from home.

While different technologies can be a great help in the workplace, an over dependency on them can lead to “an impersonal and dehumanizing quality” in the workplace.

Internet Addiction, the New Disorder? - New York Post

An Article I found interesting relating to Technology 1:

This article was about people’s addiction to technology. Not only the addictions people have with the internet and texting but the older forms of technology addiction such as television and video game addiction. The article discusses whether technology addiction or Internet addiction disorder really exists? Well, regardless of whether or not it’s a real addiction, there are many clinics open to help people who think or are addicted to the internet, with many more to open.

I think its interesting that the “experts” in this area cant agree on whether or not it’s a real addiction or not. Dr Goldsburg and others are trying to convince the Health Board that it’s a real addiction so that insurance companies will pay for counselling for Internet addiction.

Dr. Goldsburg described internet addiction in seven parts. He believed if you had three or more of these symptoms that you were an internet addict:
1)      Tolerance: if you feel you need more time online to achieve the same effect or are not satisfied if you spend the same amount of time online as usual.
2)      Withdrawal: if you stop using the internet you constantly think about it, you become anxious or distressed, you dream about what you’re missing.
3)      You tend to go on the internet or go on for longer than you wanted.
4)      You can’t control how long or how often you use the internet.
5)      You talk about the internet in daily life.
6)      You’re not as social in face to face interactions with family and friends.
7)      You continue to use the internet knowing that you suffer from one of the above or if it’s affecting your day to day life in a negative way e.g. lack of sleep.

These symptoms can also be applied to addiction to video games, emails, mobile phones and even pods. But is it a real addiction? This is the question the article constantly refers to. It has symptoms, it affects your daily life and Dr. Goldsburg has come up with a step by step “cure”. But the argument is it’s a psychological addiction, it’s not physical – there’s no drug or substance abuse as there is with alcohol and smokes.

The article goes on to describe some of the effects of internet addiction and a cure in five steps. I’m amazed at how much research has been done on internet addiction. I think it’s very interesting that they have a list of symptoms, effects and a step by step programme to recover, just like many other addictions. I knew before reading this article that people were spending more and more time online but I never realized how dependent people were becoming and how serious some people were about helping internet addicts.

Things to consider when buying a new PC or laptop:

There are many things you need to consider when buying a new pc or laptop:

·       1)   You have to budget yourself, know how much you are willing to spend.
·       2)  Have a good idea of the type of PC or computer you want. Research the brands and find out who the best manufacturers are.
·       3)   You have to figure out what type of PC you need –what do you need it for recreation, work, etc.
·       4)   It’s a good idea to get other peoples opinions on their own PCs; it will help you figure out what brand is the best and what type suits you most.
·       5)  Look around online and find out the average prices for the PCs you’re interested in and read the reviews as well.
·       6)   It’s very important to look at different brands – read the reviews about the quality of the manufacturer.
·       7)   Consider if you should buy a new or used computer.
·       8)  If you buying it second hand online, ensure its from a reliable source b checking reviews and try to use the most popular websites, e.g. EBay as you are less likely to be scammed.
·       9)  Ensure that the computer has no physical damage by inspecting it first, if you’re buying it second hand.
·      10)   If you’re buying a second hand computer, make sure that the manufacturer will transfer the computer warranty and look at the space available on the hard drive.
·      11)  Determine the amount of memory and processor you need. There are multiple CPU/Processor manufacturers.
·      12)  If you’re buying a laptop, ensure that the laptop has lots of USB ports for devices such as printer, mouse, flash drive etc, or you will also have to buy a USB hub.
·      13)  It’s a good idea to read the warranty and the operating systems.
·      14)  If you’re buying a laptop, find out the power-consumption, processing power and know what weight you want.
·      15)  Make sure your PC or laptop is compatible with all the latest updated versions as computer programmes are constantly being upgraded.
·      16)  Look around for package deals, some places, e.g. Harvey Norman includes speakers and printers when you spend a certain amount of money on a PC.
·      17)   If your buying a computer for business needs make sure its compatible with all the software you are going to need and make sure the PC has sufficient memory for your needs.
       18)  If you have an old computer, you should have a look at some of the shops that do trade ins, as you will get money off your new PC( and its good for the environment J)

These are very impotant factors to consider when buying a new laptop or PC. These precautions
help you get the computer you want, and decrease the chances of you getting ripped off or
    scammed.
